Gasteria carinata is a leaf-succulent perennial from the Cape Provinces of South Africa, where it stores water in thick, fleshy leaves and endures long dry spells. Grow it in gritty, fast-draining mix and give it bright indirect light, easing it into any direct sun to avoid scorch. Water deeply only once the soil has dried out completely through the pot, and err toward keeping it dry, since standing moisture rots the roots and base.
