Desert Ruellia, Named and Placed
Ruellia californica is the desert ruellia, a shrub in the acanthus family known for its lavender-blue trumpet flowers. It belongs to a genus of over 300 species, most of them tropical, though this one has settled into a drier, harsher niche.

Rooted in Baja's Dry Ground
This species is native to northwestern Mexico, and its subspecies peninsularis is recorded specifically from Baja California. Both call the desert or dry shrubland home, a biome that shaped a plant built for heat and sparse rain. The name traces back through botanists Vasey and Rose, later revised by Johnston and, for the peninsular form, by T.F. Daniel.
