Guide
The species-level account. Cultivar pages build on this and say where they differ.
A succulent subshrub from the Cape Provinces of South Africa, forming columns of tightly stacked, water-storing leaves. It is adapted to arid conditions and gritty, fast-draining soil, so it stores moisture and rots if kept wet. Water deeply only once the soil has dried out completely, when the leaves begin to look slightly less plump, and give it the brightest indirect light you can, with some tolerance for gentle direct sun.
