Guide
The species-level account. Cultivar pages build on this and say where they differ.
Ensete ventricosum is a large herbaceous tree from the highlands and montane grasslands of central and eastern Africa, forming a thick water-storing pseudostem and broad paddle-shaped leaves. It draws steadily on stored moisture, so let the top inch or two of mix dry before watering deeply, and keep it out of cold, soggy soil that rots the base. Give it bright light with shelter from harsh midday sun; mature plants tolerate strong light but the foliage scorches indoors against glass.
