The Brazilian prickly pear: unique among prickly pears, it matures into a genuine tree with a round cylindrical trunk topped by thin, glossy, almost leaf-like pads. Young plants grown from pad cuttings skip the trunk for years, growing instead as sprawling chains of small flat pads with pale yellow flowers. Sold in the trade under the garbled name "Opuntia argentiniana" (properly Opuntia argentina, an old synonym).
