Bougainvillea glabra is a woody, thorny flowering climber in the Nyctaginaceae family that performs best in strong direct sun; too little light suppresses the papery bracts it is grown for. It prefers to dry out substantially between drenchings, so water only when the top two inches of mix are dry, and give it fast-draining soil. It tolerates ordinary household humidity and dislikes sitting wet at the roots.
